En Route to Grand Canyon - Gallup, NM

Today's drive was relatively uneventful. Except for a couple construction delays (brief), we did not encounter any driving trauma like yesterday's flash flood in Amarillo. Speaking with a staff member at tonight's campground, we learned to never drive through Amarillo late in the day during tornado season.

We made a brief detour to a pharmacy to pick up some eye drops for our friend who had cataract surgery three weeks ago and ran out of drops earlier than expected. From there, we continued west through Albuquerque and some really pretty scenery. I'll post some photos when I have WiFi that works and doesn't use my limited data plan.

Tonight we are camped in a Good Sam park in West Gallup New Mexico called USA RV Park. Gallup bills itself as "The most patriotic small town in America". It appears to be a fairly new campground and is still expanding, with about 10 new campsites under construction. That's a good thing. Roads are paved and pads are a lovely pink-ish pea gravel. Rest rooms are very clean. A down side is that there is no grass. So, our service dog has to settle for a gravel surface. Maybe grass does not grow well here in the high desert.

We have done some climbing. We left Nashville 4 days ago at round 600 ft above sea level. OK City was at about 1300 feet and Tucumcari at 4200 feet. We are now at 6200 feet - more than a mile high. We crossed the Continental Divide west of Albuquerque at over 7200 feet.

When we arrived, we learned that USA RV Park offers dinner from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. They have Ribs, Chicken, Beef, Pork or Brisket BBQ with two sides for a reasonable price. Pay at the front desk, then show up to eat in or take out. Three of us enjoyed the ribs; Em had the chicken platter. All were good.
