Grand Staircase Escalante - Peek-A-Boo Canyon

Today's adventure was near the town of Kanab, UT in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This very large public land features multiple areas and lots of back-road paths not accessible by an automobile. We could not see it all in one day, so we booked a tour with Windows of the West Hummer Tours. Ken, our tour guide and driver, provided a private trip for the four of us through the Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. The park has multiple slot canyons; this one is about 5 miles off the paved road via a sandy, narrow, unimproved path navigable only by a vehicle like a Hummer. We spent about 1 and a half hours in the canyon taking photographs and marveling at the way water has carved out a narrow passage with sheer rock walls several hundred feet tall. We could see the deep blue sky at times and narrow shafts of light streamed through the slot casting rays of sunshine on the sandy floor of the canyon. I took about 300 photos and have selected a bunch to highlight the beauty of this place.

After the canyon, Ken drove us through the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a refuge for domestic animals large and small as well as for animals living in the wild. Best Friends owns 3300 acres in the Kanab area and reaches out across the nation to seek and take in unwanted or lost animals. They have an active adoption process as well. The facility includes a beautiful pet cemetery. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here are a lot of pictures to highlight this wonderful work of nature.
